As the introduction of ECDIS onboard ships increases so does theneed for providing chart updates in an efficient manner. The current method for transmitting chart updates to vessels is via CD’s that are dispatched weekly from the provider to distributor and from the distributor to the ship-owner who in turn forwards these to the individual ship via its agents at the next port of call. This is a time consuming and relatively costly process and it is not uncommon for the updates to arrive after the vessel has departed its port of call.
